Toyota recalls 2006 and 2007 Highlander hybrid, Lexus RX 400h in US

ABR Staff Writer Published 01 July 2011

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS) will conduct a voluntary safety recall on more than 82,000 hybrid SUVs in the US, due to faulty soldering in the vehicles' Intelligent Power Module, which is located within the Hybrid System Inverter.

The recall involves about 45,000 Toyota Highlander hybrids and 36,700 Lexus RX 400h hybrids from the 2006 and 2007 model years.

The company said that some of the transistors on the control boards in some of the subject vehicles were incompetently soldered and could be damaged from heat caused by a large current flow during high-load driving.

If the control board is damaged, warning lamps on the instrument panel will illuminate and in most of the cases the vehicle could enter a low-power driving mode, or the power-supply-circuit fuse could blow and the hybrid system will stop working.

If the fuse blows, the hybrid system will stop and the vehicle will coast to a stop.

The owners of the effected vehicles will be notified of the recall by first class mail in mid-July, 2011

The company said it is working on obtaining the necessary replacement parts and once available it will notify the owners of the effected vehicles by first class mail in mid-July, 2011.
