Renault opens new car plant in Tangier, Morocco

ABR Staff Writer Published 10 February 2012

French carmaker Renault has opened a new car-manufacturing plant in Tangier, Morocco, North Africa to increase the country's automobile industry.

The new 32 million sq ft plant will be used to build new low cost vehicles for the Dacia brand, which includes a family car which will go on sale in Europe and a utility vehicle which is scheduled to launch by end of this year.

The new plant will have an initial production capacity of about 170,000 vehicles per year and is expected to reach 340,000 to 400,000 units in 2013.

According to Renault 10% of the production at the plant is expected to be sold locally.

The new Tangier plant is expected to generate 6000 direct jobs and around 30000 indirect jobs in the northern region of Morocco.

CO2 emissions from the Tangier plant are cut by 98%, by optimizing energy consumption and using renewable energies, which is equivalent to 135,000 tons of CO2 per year.

While the remaining few tons of CO2 are offset either by buying carbon credits or by generating renewable energy on site.
