GM To Close Louisiana Plants
The plants join a list of nine others that GM plans to close permanently
General Motors (GM) is planning to close its vehicle assembly and metal-stamping plants in Shreveport, Louisiana, by 2012. The plants, which escaped an initial plant closure list when GM filed for bankruptcy protection on June 1st, would be sold off as a bad asset.
The plants join a list of nine others that GM plans to close permanently, reported wsj.
The automaker builds small pickup trucks and some Hummer models at the plants. The company has witnessed a sharp fall in vehicle sales recently. Early this month, GM announced plans to sell the Hummer line to China’s Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery.
The company filed documents in bankruptcy court stating that the plants are not going to be part of the new General Motors when it emerges from bankruptcy, said Doug Ebey, President of United Auto Workers Local 2166.
