GM To Build Small Cars At Michigan Plant

Published:29-June-2009

Retooling of the plant could begin in late 2010, with production starting in 2011

General Motors (GM) is planning to build a future small-car model at its Orion Township plant in Michigan. The plant was chosen for the small-car project over other plants in Janesville, Wisconsin, and Spring Hill, Tennessee.

GM, which is going through bankruptcy reorganization, said that the decision is dependent on the result of ongoing economic incentive negotiations between the company and government officials. Michigan has offered a package of tax incentives for GM’s assembly plants in the state.

A metal-stamping facility about five miles away from Orion, in the city of Pontiac, would stay open to supply the Orion assembly plant. The automaker said that the two plants would save about 1,400 jobs, if an agreement is reached.

The Orion assembly plant is expected to produce a combined 160,000 small and compact vehicles annually.
